89 Points IWC

Dark red, rich meaty and pungent aromas of ripe cherry and redcurrant, accented by espresso and bitter chocolate. Strikes a balance of structure and sweetness that's compelling at this price point.

Carchelo Monastrell 05

Jumilla,
Southern
Spain

Bodegas Agapito Rico, El Carche

$12.99

Ripe, dense & velvety with a fresh berry nose & a lingering, mouthwatering, chocolate-raspberry finish. Mourvedre, Merlot, Syrah, Tempranillo & Cabernet. So very different!

A nice red wine with flavors of plums and cherries. Monastrell is the Spanish name for the grape known in France as Mourvedre.

Tinto Pesquera 2004

Castilla Y Leon
North Central Spai
n

Bodegas Alejandro Fernandez tinto Pesquera, Pesquera de Duero

just $29.99

The 2004 offers the most concentrated Pesquera since the mid-1990's. Superb winemaking has resulted in a rich wine with soft, integrated tannins. Pesquera's typically mineral/gravel nose is already evident in youth, the oak nicely nuanced in complement.

“From a great vintage, [this wine] is opaque purple with a fragrant nose of lead pencil, earth, black currants, and blackberry liqueur that jumps from the glass. This is followed by a sexy wine with layered blue and black fruits intertwined with ripe tannins and good acidity. This superb, beautifully balanced effort should evolve for 4-6 years and drink well for another 10-15. —93 points WA

Wines produced by Alejandro Fernández are made exclusively from the difficult, quick-maturing Tempranillo variety, of which he is the acknowledged master. His world-famous Tinto Pesquera is aged a minimum of 18 months in oak.

Bodegas Condado de Haza, Roa (Grupo Pesquera

"This red shows mineral and light earth notes accenting a core of black cherry fruit. It's elegant on the palate, yet firm and focused.

" Thomas Matthews,
Wine Spectator
, November, 30 2004

"Bright ruby-red. Complex, youthful aromas of boysenberry, cassis, raspberry, fruitcake and mole sauce. Juicy, penetrating flavors of dark berries and leather. Firm acids give this wine terrific clarity and energy in the mouth. Finishes long, juicy and aromatic, with very firm, slightly drying tannins and hints of resiny oak and dried cranberry.

El Vinculo Tinto Crianza 2003

Castilla - La Mancha, North Southern Spain

Bodegas Alejandro Fernandez Tinto Pesquera, Campo de Criptana

$27.99

“Made from 100% Tempranillo as are all Alejandro Fernandez’s wines, is dark ruby-colored. It exhibits aromas of cedar, tobacco, damp earth, red currants and blackberry. Firm on the palate, the wine has ample ripe fruit in a chunky style. The finish is slightly compact. —87 points WA

Ancient Tempranillo vines in the heart of Don Quixote country. Grown beneath the windmills and very good with sweet tannins framing intense red berry fruit on the nose and finish.

Dominio de Tares Baltos 2004

Vinedos y Bodegas Dominio de Tares

San Roman de Bembibre

$17.99

"Beyond this wine's muscular texture, extremely black fruit and peppery flavors, there is a brilliant future. Closed and tight when first poured, air reveals juicy flavors and a sophisticated minerality. Don't touch this for at least two years; it should gain in complexity and charm. 91 points"
--- Patricio Tapia, Wine & Spirits Magazine, October 2006
Dominio de Tares Exaltos Cepas Viejas 2004

Vinedos y Bodegas Dominio de Tares

San Roman de Bembibre

$29.99

"With dark fruit, oak and mineral scents against a thick wall of tannins, this mencía feels young and unformed at the moment-hours of aeration reveal no further details. The tension in its fruit flavor and the wine's concentration suggest that it's just a matter of time in the bottle before it will fully reveal itself. 91 points"
